Before 2018, the building was a parking garage. Black Ark's founders recognized that this was an unusual advantage in the context of Huaqiangbei — where most buildings are either market stalls or conventional offices. A parking garage has critical properties that hardware makers need: reinforced floors that support heavy machinery, fire-resistant concrete construction that tolerates metalwork, welding, and sparking tools, and wide open column-free spaces that accommodate large equipment. The 2018 conversion created Huaqiangbei's first truly machine-friendly hardware facility, transforming what was once a basement parking lot into one of the most strategically located maker spaces in the world.
